Researchers, doctors press for gay office at NIH

Article Abstract:

Many researchers and physicians would like an Office of Gay and Lesbian Health Concerns established at the National Institutes of Health for the study of AIDS and other gay/lesbian health issues. The Dept of Health and Human Services has said that the proposal will receive serious consideration, but it is not clear that a special office is warranted. Researchers believe the office would improve collection of data which would be useful for various studies. Some doctors claim that it is not fair to establish specialty offices.

HCFA pleased with Medicare bundling of cardiac pay

Article Abstract:

The bundling of hospital and physician Medicare payments for heart bypass care has proven so efficient that the Health Care Financing Administration will take the program national. The arrangement is forcing hospitals and doctors to work more closely to improve care. The result has been a $35 million saving for the federal government over the pilot's five-year life. Physicians see the program as a threat to their autonomy and to the quality of care.

New hope for key agenda items; medicine's leaders express cautious optimism

Article Abstract:

Physicians hope that the 104th Congress will pass measures concerning patients' and physicians' rights, tort reform and relief from antitrust law. If the Republican majority enacts incremental health care reforms, some of the proposals recommended by the American Medical Assn may be included. Political controversy is predicted in the consideration of such laws as the Patient Protection Act.
