Respiratory diseases and allergies in two polluted areas in East Germany

Article Abstract:

Allergies and respiratory diseases in two areas with industrial pollution in East Germany are discussed. A cross-sectional epidemiological study to acquire data for 2,470 children aged 5-14 has been carried out. The children were from the polluted areas and from a neighboring area with no industrial pollution sources. Children from one polluted area have about a 50% increased prevalence of physician-diagnosed allergies for a lifetime and about twice the number of repiratory symptoms vs those from the cleaner area.

The effect of ambient carbon monoxide on low birth weight among children born in Southern California between 1989 and 1993

Article Abstract:

The effect of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure in the last trimester of pregnancy on the rate of low birth weight in the Los Angeles, CA, area has been studied. A retrospective cohort of 125,573 infants whose mothers lived within 2 mi of one of 18 CO monitoring stations was chosen, with some exceptional situations excluded. It was found that 2,813 of the children or 2.2% were low in birth weight and that the risk of low birth weight was associated with exposure to higher levels of ambient CO.
