Respiratory viruses in acute otitis media

Article Abstract:

A vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus might prevent otitis media in young children. Otitis media is an inflammation or infection in the middle ear. Although it is often caused by bacteria, research has shown that some viruses may also cause otitis media. A 1999 study of 456 children with an upper respiratory tract infection found that 48 had respiratory syncytial virus in their middle ear. Seventy-four percent of the children with a respiratory tract infection caused by respiratory syncytial virus also had the virus in their middle ear. Influenza vaccines have lowered the incidence of otititis media.

A trial of a 9-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in children with and those without HIV infection

Article Abstract:

A vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae can prevent pneumonia and other pneumococcal infections in young children, according to a study 19,922 South African babies. The vaccine reduced the number of pneumococcal infections by 65% in HIV-infected children and by 83% in HIV-negative children. This vaccine is effective against strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae that are common in the developing world.
