Changing physician performance: a systematic review of the effect of continuing medical education strategies

Article Abstract:

Some widely used continuing medical education methods appear to provide little improvement in physician performance and health care outcomes while some of the most effective methods are not used. Researchers reviewed 99 published articles on medical databases from 1975 to 1994. Several types of educational programs were evaluated. Formal medical conferences provided minimal improvement in professional practice. Educational materials were also not very effective. However, close to two-thirds of the 160 educational methods identified did result in improvements. The most effective methods were patient-mediated interventions, outreach visits, reminders, and opinion leaders. These methods are among the least used CME techniques.
