Retaining sealant on salivary contaminated enamel

Article Abstract:

Sealants may be retained on saliva contaminated dental enamel for up to two years if a layer of Scotchbond is applied between the sealant and the enamel. Sealant is used to bond dental enamel to dentin, the hard outer portion of of teeth. A study compared the retention of sealant alone or a combination of sealant and Scotchbond on saliva contaminated dental enamel at one hour, one week, one month, six months, one year and two years. The sealant alone was completely lost from the enamel after one week, but the combination of sealant and Scotchbond was still retained after two years. Retention of the combination of sealant and Scotchbond on contaminated enamel after two years was comparable to that of sealant alone on uncontaminated enamel.
