Risk of developing colorectal cancer following a negative colonoscopy examination

Article Abstract:

A study determines the duration and magnitude of the risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) following performance of a negative colonoscopy. The risk of developing CRC after a negative colonoscopy remains decreased for more than ten years after the index procedure, but there is a need to improve the early detection rate of right-sided colorectal neoplasia in usual clinical practice.

A 71-year-old woman contemplating a screening colonoscopy

Article Abstract:

A case of 71-year-old woman who is contemplating to undergo a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer encouraged by her physician is discussed. It is suggested that the best choice for the woman would be to resume home-based fecal occult blood testing annually, with an understanding that an abnormal result would require a colonoscopy.
