Risking change in the theatre

Article Abstract:

Risk management is one of many new initiatives in operating departments where the potential for error and liability is high. Risk management involves identifying and assessing risks to patients and staff in order to minimise the possibilities of harm. To a large extent, risk management is about the interaction of quality, the legal system and the process of change. A successful risk management programme requires close cooperation between managers and practitioners. Risk management involves a continuous circle in which practices are assessed, change is planned and implemented, and practices are assessed once more.

Making sense of electrosurgery

Article Abstract:

Electrosurgery involves the use of radio frequency (RF) electrical current in surgical operations. It differs from cautery as the electrode does not heat up. It is used for cutting, coagulation and necrosis. Monopolar and bipolar electrosurgery may be used. Burning is the chief patient risk although the process may be susceptible to low frequency mains current. Explosion is possible if inflammable preparations are used. The process may interfere with other electro-medical apparatus.
