Association of TNF2, a TNF-[alpha] Promoter Polymorphism, With Septic Shock Susceptibility and Mortality: A Multicenter Study

Article Abstract:

Patients who have the TNF2 form of the gene for tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) have a higher risk of septic shock and death than other patients. Septic shock is a type of shock caused by bacterial infection throughout the bloodstream. In a study of 89 patients with septic shock and 87 healthy volunteers, 39% of those with septic shock had the TNF2 gene compared to 18% of the healthy volunteers. The patients with septic shock who died were more likely to have this gene than those who did not. The TNF2 gene raised the risk of death almost four times in patients with septic shock.

Genetic Factors in Septic Shock

Article Abstract:

A gene for tumor necrosis factor alpha appears to be linked to septic shock. Septic shock occurs when the cardiovascular system collapses after an infection. A 1999 study found that patients with septic shock were more likely to have the TNF2 gene than a group of healthy volunteers. TNF2 is a form of the gene for tumor necrosis factor alpha, which is known to be involved in septic shock. The presence of the TNF2 gene also increased the risk of death in patients with septic shock. It is not clear why this gene would exist in the population when it causes such a serious condition.
