Role of transforming growth factor beta in human disease

Article Abstract:

An increase or decrease in the production of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) can cause disease. TGF-beta is a protein produced by most cells that regulates cell proliferation and differentiation, wound healing, embryonic development, and the formation of new blood vessels. The diseases caused by a deficiency or excess of TGF-beta include cancer, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, fibrotic disease, and atherosclerosis. Drugs and antibodies that inhibit TGF-beta can be used to treat an excess of TGF-beta.

Lymphocyte intracellular free calcium concentration is increased in preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

A calcium deficiency that causes calcium to accumulate inside lymphocytes may be linked to preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, swelling, and mild kidney disease. Researchers measured calcium levels inside lymphocytes in non-pregnant women, pregnant women, pregnant women with high blood pressure and pregnant women with preeclampsia. The women with preeclampsia had the highest calcium levels compared to the three other groups.

Transforming growth factor [beta] signaling, vascular remodeling, and hypertension

Article Abstract:

Mice deficient in Emilin1, an extracellular growth factor expressed in blood vessels were observed and were diagnosed with hypertension. The findings indicate that Emilin1 regulates the availability of transforming growth factor [beta] (TGF-[beta]), contributing to a growing body of evidence implicating TGF-[beta] in hypertension.
