SARS-associated coronavirus

Article Abstract:

The virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) appears to be a brand new virus as far as humans are concerned. It is a coronavirus, a group of viruses that affects both humans and animals. However, this particular coronavirus has never been detected in humans before. It appears to be an animal virus that gained the ability to infect humans.

Identification of a novel coronavirus in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe the coronavirus that is believed to cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). It was isolated from tissue samples from patients and is distantly related to the coronaviruses that cause the common cold. However, it appears to be more serious than the common cold and has caused many deaths in Asia.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome

A summary of what doctors know about SARS as of December, 2003, is presented. Topics include cause, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical symptoms, laboratory abnormalities, X-ray manifestations, diagnosis, prognostic factors, management, and prevention. A chronology of the 2002-2003 outbreak is included.
