Psychological dysfunction and HIV/AIDS risk behavior

Article Abstract:

High-risk HIV drug and sexual behavior may increase with severity of psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and hostility. Researchers administered questionnaires and interviews to 834 opioid users in methadone treatment programs. High scores on a composite psychological test of anxiety, depression, and hostility were associated with greater risk behaviors regarding drug use and sexual activity. The high-risk drug behaviors included using dirty drug equipment and sharing that equipment. High-risk sexual behaviors included having several partners and having unprotected sex. Cocaine use was notably associated with high-risk behavior. Drug treatment programs need to provide HIV counseling and work on keeping such at-risk people in treatment, where they are less likely to engage in risky behavior.

Article Abstract:

Many adolescents do not believe that they are at risk from HIV/AIDS during a period of their lives when experimentation in sex and drugs is a way of life. Adolescents must be warned of the risks of AIDS/HIV in a manner which does not judge their life styles. They require information on the usage of condoms and personal responsibilities by educators who do not believe that providing this kind of information will increase promiscuity or sexual activity.
