Safety committees: how labor and management find common ground

Article Abstract:

Occupational safety is best addressed by joint safety committees in which both management and rank-and-file employees are represented. Unions can ensure their representation in safety committees by including such a provision in their collective bargaining agreements. Employee participation, however, is not a guarantee that a safety program will be successful. In the end, how much trust labor and management place in each other will determine the success of a safety program.

Confined-space rescue: should you ever remove respiratory protection?

Article Abstract:

Confined-escape rescuers are advised to enter confined spaces wearing their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepiece with air tank and harness strapped on securely. If removal of the respiratory protection becomes imperative, the confined space should be ventilated to eliminate atmospheric hazards. Another alternative is to wear a supplied-air respirator equipped with an escape SCBA containing at least five minutes of air.
