Abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol: regimens, efficacy, acceptability and future directions

Safety, efficacy, and acceptability of medical abortion in China, Cuba, and India: a comparative trial of mifepristone-misprostol versus surgical abortion

Article Abstract:

Drug-induced abortion with mifepristone-misoprostol may be safe and well accepted by women in developing countries. Researchers in China, Cuba, and India allowed 1373 women pregnant less than 56 days to choose between surgical abortion or medical abortion. Medical abortion was accomplished using 600 mg of mifepristone followed two days later by 400 micrograms of misoprostol. Failure rates for medical abortion were 8.6% in China, 16% in Cuba, and 5.2% in India, and exceeded failure rates for surgical abortion. More women preferred medical abortion even though they experienced more bleeding.

Use of various ultrasonographic criteria to evaluate the efficacy of mifepristone and misoprostol for medical abortion

Article Abstract:

Modern formulas for estimating gestational age based on ultrasonographic measurements are no better than older methods. In a study of 2,121 pregnant women who used mifepristone and misoprostol to induce abortion, the rate of success was highest in those who took the pills at or before 42 days' gestation.
