Safety first

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety Executive has produced a 40-page guide for health workers and employers which aims to prevent violent incidents in the workplace. Twice as many nurses get assaulted than any other type of worker so it is important that they know how to defuse and deal with dangerous situations. Conducting a risk assessment of staff and the environment is the first priority. Staff working in paediatrics may need to consider aggression from relatives while peripatetic staff may find their uniform is a potential risk factor. Good security measures makes staff feel safer.

Broke and bewildered

Article Abstract:

Many nurses in the UK believe that the government should set aside much more money for cancer care services. Speakers at a recent debate on cancer care pointed out that the government's spending priorities seem to be wrong, leaving many people without the cancer care they desperately need. Indeed, some observers believe that cancer patients will in future have to fund their own treatment. Nurses have also highlighted serious regional inequalities in the standard of cancer care.
