Safety in numbers: statistics show work-related deaths unchanged, while total unintentional-injury deaths increase

There are around 5,100 work-related deaths due to unintentional injuries in the US in 1999, according to provisional estimates, unchanged from the 1998 estimate. There were around 3.8 million disabling work injuries in 1999.

1994 work-related deaths decline

Article Abstract:

Preliminary statistics from the National Safety Council indicate that there were 8,800 work-related deaths from unintentional injuries in 1994, a 3% drop from 1993, while about 3.4 million workers suffered disabling work injuries. The total costs of work-related injuries in 1994 totalled $110.8 billion, of which $94 billion was due to medical expenses, wage and productivity losses and administrative expenses. Other statistics on work-related deaths and injuries in 1994 are presented.

Work-related deaths decline

Article Abstract:

The National Safety Council estimates that there were 4,800 work-related deaths due to unintentional injuries in 1995, a 4% drop from the 1994 estimate. A total of about 3.3 million disabling work injuries were recorded in 1995. For 1995, total work-injury costs amounted to $112.2 billion while wage and productivity losses reached $97.2 billion. Employer costs reached $10.4 billion. Unintentional injuries were the fifth leading cause of death in 1995.
