School-associated Pertussis outbreak-Yavapai County, Arizona, September 2002-February 2003

Article Abstract:

The Yavapai County Health Department (YCHD) in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and school officials, notified the community of the pertussis outbreak in the middle school and initiated control measures. In some schools , a single PFGE profile predominated among the middle school isolates, indicating student-to-student spread.

Shigellosis Outbreak Associated With an Unchlorinated Fill-and-Drain Wading Pool--Iowa, 2001

Article Abstract:

Nine people in Iowa developed a type of food poisoning called shigellosis after swimming in a community wading pool that was not properly chlorinated. Shigella can enter the water when small children who have diarrhea play in the water and anyone who swallows the water may become ill.

Outbreak of Powassan Encephalitis--Maine and Vermont, 1999-2001

Article Abstract:

The cases of four Vermont and Maine residents who developed encephalitis caused by the Powassan virus are reviewed. This virus is transmitted by ticks and the patients were initially tested for West Nile virus.
