Screening for vaginal cancer

Article Abstract:

A Pap smear to detect vaginal cancer in women who have had a hysterectomy is probably unnecessary. Annual Pap smears became common after the introduction of oral contraceptives. The practice was so common that physicians were alarmed when the American Cancer Society in 1980 recommended Pap smears once every 3 years or longer in low-risk women. Women who have had a hysterectomy are usually given a Pap smear to detect vaginal cancer, but a 1996 study found that very few of these women have an abnormal smear. Vaginal cancer is not common and it would not be cost effective to continue this procedure.
