Search engines: the power and the garbage

Article Abstract:

Search engines are able to connect users with vast information source, but can also bring up pages of useless data. A new indexing structure that indexes all words in a document to the URL has increased the likelihood that a user's search will bring up quantities of worthless information, such as untitled or undated documents and documents with tampered contents.

Article Abstract:

Electronic junk mail, called spam, has become so prevalent in 1998 that government intervention is nearly assured. Four bills are pending in Congress that address the spam issue. Three would require correct e-mail headers so that consumers could request removal from the advertiser's list, and one would expand the junk-advertising fax law to apply to e-mail.
