Secretion of prostanoids by platelets and monocytes in normal and hypertensive pregnancies

Article Abstract:

Increased secretion of thromboxane by immune cells called peripheral blood monocytes may play a role in preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a systemic disorder during pregnancy that is characterized by blood vessel contraction and abnormal blood clotting. Among 55 women between 20 and 42 years old, 13 were not pregnant, 13 were pregnant with no complications, 19 were pregnant and had preeclampsia and 10 were pregnant and had chronic hypertension. Peripheral blood monocytes of pregnant women with chronic hypertension or preeclampsia secreted significantly higher amounts of thromboxane than those of non-pregnant women or pregnant women without hypertension. Peripheral blood platelets of women with chronic hypertension also secreted increased levels of thromboxane. Thromboxane is a naturally-occurring chemical in the body that causes platelet aggregation and blood vessel constriction.

Effect of serum on secretion of prostacyclin and endothelin-1 by decidual endothelial cells from normal and preeclamptic pregnancies

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with hypertension may have factors in their blood that activate secretion of prostacyclin from cells lining blood vessels. Prostacyclin is a potent substance that dilates blood vessels and causes platelets to group together. Researchers analyzed blood samples and cells from the inside of umbilical veins and from placenta specimens from pregnant women with preeclampsia (hypertension) between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy. Cells were exposed to either blood from preeclamptic women or from women with normal blood pressure. Cells from women with preeclampsia secreted more prostacyclin than did cells from normal women, and umbilical vein cells secreted more prostacyclin than did the placental cells. Blood from women with preeclampsia stimulated increased prostacyclin secretion, particularly by placental cells.

Secretion of prostaglandins and endothelin-1 by decidual endothelial cells from normal and preeclamptic pregnancies: comparison with human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Article Abstract:

Cells lining the human umbilical vein may respond differently to vasoactive substances than cells lining the placenta. Vasoactive substances are chemicals that dilate or constrict blood vessels. This difference in response may increase understanding of preeclampsia, a serious complication of pregnancy involving hypertension and protein in the urine. Researchers compared the amount of vasoactive substances in tissue samples from the lining of the placenta to the amount produced by cells lining the umbilical vein, from both normal and preeclamptic pregnancies. Umbilical vein cells contained higher levels of prostaglandin and prostacyclin, which dilate blood vessels, and of endothelin-1, which constricts blood vessels, than placental cells contained.
