Secrets safe with school nurses

Article Abstract:

John Bennett, a health education coordinator from Coventry, England, is running a pilot drop-in centre for school pupils over the age of 14. The centre gives advice on a variety of health care issues, including sex and contraception. The young people may be under age; however all consultations are confidential. Having a clear policy on confidentiality helps to establish and maintain the trust of the youngsters who ask for advice. If sexual abuse is suspected the nurse will discuss it with the client before referring the matter to other agencies.

Good on paper: after two years of the nurse-prescribing pilot, the scheme is finally to be extended to primary care nurses throughout England

Article Abstract:

The latest White Paper, Primary Care: Delivering the Future, announced the extension of the nurse-prescribing pilot to 1,500 practices, involving some 500 nurses, from April 1997. Nurse prescribing will then be introduced to all district nurses and health visitors throughout England from April 1998. Karen Luker, leading the existing nurse-prescribing sites, believes that it will enable nurses to concentrate on evaluating treatments and give appropriate treatments.

Pregnant pause: nursing bodies have been asked for their views on school nurses prescribing emergency contraception
