Seize the opportunity to mobilize support for MSAs!

Article Abstract:

Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) will return power over healthcare purchasing to the consumer, thereby improving the physician-patient relationship. Freed of pressure from third-party payors, physicians will compete for patients on the basis of ability, not cost. The enabling legislation is HR 1818, which has bipartisan congressional support. Any individual covered by catastrophic health insurance will be eligible for MSA tax deductions.

Refusing federal funds; Wyoming opts out of plan for kids' health coverage

Article Abstract:

The state of Wyoming has decided not to accept its share of the Children's Health Insurance Program, altough it is a part of the $20 bil expansion and distribution of Medicare and Medicaid health insurance. Wyoming will lose $7.7 mil in funds for covering about 15,000 uninsured children after the legislature voted against adoption on Feb 26, 1998. The inability of the state to fund the $2.7 mil in Wyoming's match was the rationale.

Criticism raised over cigarette taxes to fund kids' insurance

Article Abstract:

A bipartisan children's health insurance bill under consideration in the Senate will not pass, according to Sen Arlen Specter, if it relies on a tobacco tax increase for funding. In comments at a Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee hearing, Specter predicted that the bill would result in a debate on taxes instead of on children's health. He is sponsoring an alternative bill.
