Plasma viral load concentrations in women and men from different exposure categories and with known duration of HIV infection

Article Abstract:

HIV-infected women seem to have lower blood levels of the virus than men, according to a study of 245 HIV-infected men and 170 HIV-infected women. For this reason, doctors may want to begin treatment at lower viral levels than they would in men.

Low frequency of severe hepatotoxicity and association with HCV coinfection in HIV-positive patients treated with HAART

Article Abstract:

The authors discuss the effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV patients, and also its toxicity. They discuss a study done to determine levels of toxicity to the liver, especially when the patients are co-infected with hepatitis C. They found that there is a low risk of liver toxicity, although the risk is increased in co-infected patients.

Self-reported symptoms and medication side effects influence adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy in persons with HIV infection

Article Abstract:

Self-reported symptoms and medication side effects have been found to influence adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in those with HIV infection. Of 358 persons enrolled in the study, 22% reported nonadherence in a study to identify variables predictive of nonadherence to HAART and to assess whether self-reported symptoms or medication side effects are related to adherence.
