Self-scheduling in five med/surg units: a comparison

Article Abstract:

Nurse administrators implemented self-scheduling for nurses in five medical/surgical units with differing degrees of success. Each unit recognized the need for a rotating evaluative committee, staff education, improved negotiating skills, written guidelines and support from administrators. Nurse managers who change to self-scheduling must be prepared to offer creative decision making to their nurses while balancing proper planning and education.

Tools for a successful interview

Article Abstract:

Nurse managers are increasingly expected to interview potential employees. Group or panel interviews have shown more reliable results than interviews conducted by one person. Nurses in a telemetry unit developed interview tools to objectively identify the qualities valued in new employees. The resulting instrument was evaluated by the hospital's human resources department for accuracy.
