Serum antioxidants and risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

The role of alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene and retinol in the development and progression of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) was investigated in a nested case-control study combined with a longitudinal population study. Results showed a reduced incidence of NIDDM in patients with high serum levels of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene. The reduction, however, became insignificant after adjustment of the serum levels for cardiovascular risk factors, indicating that low levels of dietary antioxidants are not directly related to the onset of NIDDM.

Dietary determinants of serum beta-carotene and serum retinol

Article Abstract:

Serum samples from 224 men and 117 women were stored at deep-freeze temperature and analyzed 10-15 years later to evaluate the relationship betweenthe major carotenoids, beta-carotene and retinol. A positive relationship between dietary beta-carotene and serum beta-carotene was noted among non-smokers and among females. Carrot was identified as the primary source of beta-carotene. Serum retinols were found to higher among the male samples.
