Set a microbe to kill a microbe: drug resistance renews interest in phage therapy

Article Abstract:

Doctors are focusing on phage therapy to treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. Phage therapy uses viruses that kill bacteria, which are called bacteriophages. Some researches have isolated the viral enzymes that actually kill the bacteria and hope to use those to treat bacterial infections. Bacteriophages could also be used to sterilize foods and other objects.

An Ebola epidemic simmers in Africa: in remote region, outbreak shows staying power

Article Abstract:

An Ebola outbreak has continued in the border region between Gabon and the Congo since October, 2001. But many scientists have been unable to investigate it thoroughly because of SARS, West Nile virus, and monkeypox outbreaks. As of July, 2003, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not even reported the outbreak in its publication Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
