Sex, lives and education

Article Abstract:

More attention needs to be focused on the life-quality needs of people with learning difficulties, according to community teams manager Helen Cook. Specific family planning services have been set up by Cook for people with learning difficulties and the project has had to expand to take on board the sexual education of those from both the gay and lesbian community. Many young people with learning difficulties are not given the opportunity to receive sex education. Many become pregnant or are easy targets for sexual abuse. The government has commended the project.

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual adolescents: providing esteem-enhancing care to a battered population

Article Abstract:

Health care professionals should provide a supportive environment for gay and lesbian adolescents, employing gender-neutral language, including sensitive questions about homosexuality in history taking, and displaying educational materials and posters that include gay youth. Assuring confidentiality and showing sensitivity toward sexual and gender identity orientations may help gay adolescents feel comfortable. Health problems affecting gays in particular include depression, anxiety, suicide, HIV infection and violence.
