Shot in the dark

Article Abstract:

Antiviral therapy did not have many advances before 1977 when the medical profession recognized acyclovir as a safe treatment for herpes. Antiviral drugs act by entering the viral DNA chain, due to their resemblance to a nucleoside, and disrupting further replication. Other developments in antiviral therapy include interferons, to treat infections caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses, and the development of an anti-influenza vaccine. The chief drawbacks of antiviral therapy are drug toxicity and the possible development of resistant strains of a virus.

Hepatitis A and B were discovered during the 1960s, with a further discovery of Hepatitis C made in 1989. Hepatitis may be transmitted when drinking water is contaminated by faecal matter or through sexual transmission of bodily fluids. The next type of Hepatitis to be discovered will be given the tag of type F.

Better out than in

Article Abstract:

This somewhat bizarre collection of reports recount stories of people who ingested some truly strange objects. Were it not for the fact that many of them died, this is a rather humorous set of stories.
