Slippery dilemma

Article Abstract:

UK health secretary Stephen Dorrell says that he knew nothing about the events at Ashworth High Security Hospital, and he has set up a judicial enquiry to find out how patients were able to obtain, duplicate and promote pornographic literature via the Internet. Unions at the hospital blame staff shortages and inefficient management for the problems. Managers claim that the Department of Health knew about the situation but this has been hotly denied. As a result of the judicial enquiry, it is likely that major changes will be made to the running of special hospitals in Britain.

Bleak prospects

Article Abstract:

A survey by British Broadcasting Corporation programme, 'Today' has indicated declining career prospects for newly qualified nurses and a possible future 20% decrease in nurse student intakes. Recession and work force stability may be attributable. However, skill-mix recommendations may also have reduced demand for qualified nurses. National Health Service trusts may be employing more health-care assistants than nurses to save money.

Bottomley bobs back

Article Abstract:

Virginia Bottomley successfully completed her first year as UK Health Secretary in May 1993. Former critics have recognised her political astuteness. For example, many have praised her handling of hospital closures, London, England. She has displayed firmness while retaining a caring image. However, National health Service reform may have had more influence on health policy than Bottomley's personal direction.
