Smoke alarm for mothers: the risks of foetal damage are greatly heightened if the mother smokes during pregnancy. But more than medical advice is needed to help women quit

Article Abstract:

Bad effects of smoking on foetuses are well known but many mothers continue to smoke before, during and after pregnancy. Health professionals advise women to reduce their smoking or stop altogether without giving further information. Training programmes to help health professionals to encourage behavioural change have been introduced by the Health Education Authority and there is a call for school nurses to be included in such programmes. There is a need for individualised advice and a continuity of care by a named midwife, to develop trust and respect between smokers and professionals.

A rare event

Article Abstract:

Midwives caring for a pregnant women with classic maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) increased their understanding of inborn metabolic disorders. The woman saw the consultant obstetrician every two weeks and had a ultrasound every four weeks to monitor the development of the baby since it is not known how MSUD affects the fetus. Blood tests were carried out every two weeks and her high protein diet was assessed at regular intervals. The baby was delivered at 38 weeks and there are no indications that he has inherited MSUD.
