Smoking and diabetes

Article Abstract:

A stop-smoking programme for diabetics has been developed since smoking further increases the risks already faced by people with diabetes. Smoking is a potential factor in the development of vascular disease and other diabetic complications. Diabetics wanting to stop smoking are offered help and advice when they attend the outpatient clinic. Stress factors and anxieties about the possibility of gaining weight on stopping smoking can be discussed with the diabetes nurse specialist who can arrange relaxation therapy if appropriate.

New therapies for the management of type 2 diabetes

Article Abstract:

Non-pharmacological therapy should be used initially when a patient is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. If this is not successful, then oral therapies, including meglitinides, insulin and biguanides, must be considered. Latest therapies closely target insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction, the main defects of type 2 diabetes.
