Social network meetings ease trauma of psychiatric admission

Article Abstract:

The use of reception meetings is helping to ease the psychological impact of admission to psychiatric hospitals. Issues surrounding admission and hospital routines are discussed at the meetings, which are attended by the patient and close friends or family. The meetings provide an opportunity for hospital staff to discuss the patient's previous mental health, while sharing information regarding care planning. It may be important for some minority groups to know certain procedures are being carried out according to their cultural or religious teachings.

Boxed in

Article Abstract:

Approved social workers (ASWs) play a key role in assessing mental health clients for admission to hospital in the UK. However, their work is not governed by a professional regulatory body. The central role of ASWs can have a negative impact on clients, particularly during crises. The training of ASWs is inferior to that of mental health nurses, whose skills receive very little recognition in the Mental Health Act 1983. It is now time for mental health nurses to start assessing patients for admission to hospital.

Diversion schemes: an alternative to court

Article Abstract:

It has been shown in the UK that diversion schemes can play a valuable role in dealing with offenders with mental health problems. Diversion allows these offenders to be referred to services which meet their particular requirements, thus removing them from the vicious cycle of offending, imprisonment and reoffending. There are now a number of different diversion schemes in operation across the country, and diversion opportunities have been provided at all stages of the criminal justice system.
