London calling

Article Abstract:

The new Mayor of London, due to take up the role in July 2000, will have a great influence on medical care in London. The Mayor will have to study the draft of the first health strategy for London, published by the National Health Service Executive. He or she will have some responsibility for matters such as housing standards and clean parks, which are related to public health.

Handle with care

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disease of the bones which causes brittle bones which can easily be broken. According to the UK Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, about 20% of families suffer incidences of the disease, about which health professionals have little knowledge. Something in the air

Article Abstract:

There has been a significant rise in the incidence of asthma in the UK over recent decades. Indeed, one in five children now has a diagnosis of asthma. This is partly attributable to the recording of mild symptoms which might have been ignored in the past and to diagnoses of asthma for conditions which might previously have been identified as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. However, there is reasonably reliable evidence that the number of school-age children with asthma has actually risen. Some experts attribute the rise in the incidence of asthma to the western diet.
