Article Abstract:

Heavy work loads are preventing UK community nurses from practising new and effective wound care management, according to a study which revealed a lack of continued education on the subject coupled with a low standard of dressing ability. The study must be taken in context, with only 23 nurses responding out of 40 originally sent questionnaires. The findings highlight the need to focus education on issues involving moist environment dressing, topical antiseptics and bacteria in wounds.

Points of friction

Article Abstract:

Hypergranulation of gastrostomy treatments can be reduced or even prevented by taping the stoma tube to the surrounding tissue which reduces friction and subsequent inflammation. Hypergranulation can prevent the thorough healing process of a wound, prolonging time in hospital, causing distress to the patient and causing unnecessary surgical complications. Polyurethane foam dressings applied to the area of the stoma insertion can help suppress hypergranulation and speed healing.
