State regulators consider model HMO provider contract

Article Abstract:

A group of state regulators has drafted a model health maintenance organization (HMO) contract to be used by states to evaluate contracts between HMOs and physicians. The model contract includes several provisions to safeguard enrollees. For example, it includes a section requiring HMOs to hire a sufficient number and range of physicians and to continue caring for patients during the contracted period even if the HMO goes out of business. In addition, the contract forbids HMOs to charge fees additional to the required co-payments for services from non-participating physicians.

Consensus panel offers response to oversupply

Article Abstract:

A work group featuring six medical associations with significant ties to medical education has released the "Consensus Statement on the Physician Workforce", which suggests that limited access to graduate medical education could reduce the physician oversupply. IMG leaders claim that de-emphasis on foreign medical graduate students will compromise physician quality. Some of the consensus statement recommendations include financing of medical education (GME) with an all-payer system and allocation of GME funds to entities which provide the education.

Genetics research already touching your practice; patients say they expect you to know about latest findings

Article Abstract:

Physicians will have to incorporate genetics into their medical practices according to an American Medical Assn conference held in Mar 1998. A survey released by the association stated that 59% of respondents expected to take advantage of genetic testing. However, sharing test results with members of the patient's family and costs are two of the issues which need to be taken into consideration.
