The additional funds allocated to the National Health Service (NHS) by the UK government are welcome, but will not be sufficient to solve all the NHS problems, and spending will need to be prioritized. There is likely to be some conflict.

Better by design

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the planning and design of new hospitals in England are discussed. The importance of designing attractive, imaginative buildings and interiors, which make both patients and staff feel better, is stressed.

Statements on how to tackle world poverty are laudable. However, its elimination will involve some tough choices

Article Abstract:

The UK government should be aware that eliminating health inequalities will inevitably involve tackling poverty, as low income is the main cause of health inequalities. It will be necessary to make very difficult priority decisions based on a clear understanding of the impact of government spending on healthcare. The government may even have to decide not to include health services that show low cost-effectiveness in the basic clinical package.
