States pave own paths on smoking, other health issues

Article Abstract:

A number of health policy measures were voted on during the Nov 1992 elections. Abortion, tobacco and smoking, euthanasia, abortion and gay rights were among the issues brought before state voters. Notably, Massachusetts raised its excise tax on cigarettes by 25 cents, only the second state ever to do so. Tobacco industry litigation prevented three other anti-cigarette measures from appearing on state ballots. In Colorado, a measure passed repealing gay rights laws, and in Arizona voters rejected a resolution barring most abortions.

Two doses advised to prevent more outbreaks

Article Abstract:

School children should receive two measles vaccinations, according to the Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The number of measles cases has dropped since an epidemic in 1989, when the disease attacked preschool children who had not been inoculated and older students who had received only one dose of vaccine. Authorities agree that children should receive their first inoculation at 15 months, but recommended age for the second dose varies from five years to teen age.
