Stem cells created from somatic cells

Article Abstract:

A team of scientists from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts fused human embryonic stem cells with skin cells from an adult male and found that the adult cells reverted to an embryonic state. The new technique might eventually offer an alternative to existing means of producing stem cell lines but it will require overcoming significant technical hurdles before it can be used for developing therapies to treat patients.

Role of maternal cells in diabetes probed

Article Abstract:

Maternal cells are transmitted from mother to fetus, but scientists have discovered that some maternal cells differentiate into pancreatic islet beta cells. The possible role of these maternal microchimeric cells in aiding the production of insulin in children with diabetes is studied, considering the benefits in future treatment of the disease.
