Striking Against Managed Care

Article Abstract:

Strikes by French doctors during 1995-1996 may not prevent significant health care reforms from taking place in France. Most French doctors still get paid via fee-for-service and maintain a high degree of autonomy. However, in response to rising health care costs, the government has proposed limiting the number of medical students, controlling physician fees, prohibiting certain practices, and placing primary care physicians in the role of gatekeeper. When these reforms were announced in 1995, physicians staged five strikes and national demonstrations.

On White Coats and Professional Development: The Formal and the Hidden Curricula

Article Abstract:

The white coat is symbolic of the authority, exclusivity, privilege, and influence of physicians. Conferring on medical graduates the symbol of both their profession and of purity, the coat has been adopted as a symbol of medicine by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Despite the positive association of medicine and the white coat, the white coat ceremony reinforces the exclusive and exclusionary nature of the medical profession, and ought to be replaced by a more inclusive ritual.
