Suicide acceptable on operatic stage, not in real life

Article Abstract:

Physician-assisted suicide cannot be condoned. While suicide is acceptable and cathartic in the many operas that depict it, it is not so in real life. The American Medical Assn correctly rejected the practice earlier in 1996, and the Supreme Court should do the same when it makes its decision. The heros of Puccini's Madam Butterfly, Verdi's Aida, and other renowned operas would be treated with psychotherapy or even hospitalized in real society and not assisted in their deaths.

Future of genetics: watch to avoid Titanic mistakes

Article Abstract:

The future of genetics is a bit frightening, like the sinking of the Titanic, a well-endowed ship that was misguided into an iceberg because the captain did not know where he was going. Developments in biomedical technology should be taken more slowly until there is a clear course decided on. Ethical questions and considerations surround the issue of cloning and slowing the aging process, for example.

Mandated use of PA in surgery raises two concerns

Article Abstract:

Managed care firms should not issue mandates requiring surgeons to use inadequately trained staff during procedures. The only criterion surgeons should use to determine staffing requirements is the patient's welfare. Patients should also be notified of any managed care mandates that could raise the risk level of a procedure.
