Suicide: are you at risk?

Article Abstract:

People aged 60 or older were the only age group for whom the suicide rate rose during the 1980s. Risk factors include isolation, masculine gender, social status, depression and other illnesses. Preoccupation with death and changes in behavior are among the warning signs.

Learning: are you ever too old to learn something new?

Article Abstract:

Older adults will learn new information more easily if it is something that they can use. Techniques for improving learning performance include comparing new information to familiar information, paraphrasing what is learned and identifying key words.

Anxiety: manage your worries - or they'll manage you

Article Abstract:

Older people often experience anxiety caused by worries about finances, health, safety and loss. Anxiety can cause sleep problems, eating problems and loss of concentration. Techniques for recognizing and dealing with anxiety are presented.
