Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome

Article Abstract:

Abdominal pain, vomiting after eating, and partial obstruction of the small bowel may be caused by superior mesenteric artery syndrome. The symptoms, as illustrated in the case of a 14-year-old girl, result from the superior mesenteric artery compressing the duodenum against the aorta. Radiographic examinations reveal duodenal dilatation that ends abruptly at the third portion of the duodenum. Surgical duodeno-jujenostomy is frequently curative when conservative management is ineffective.

Rickets and Secondary Craniosynostosis Associated With Long-term Antacid Use in an Infant

Article Abstract:

A 10-month old child developed craniosynostosis after prolonged treatment with aluminum antacids. Aluminum antacids can impair the absorption of phosphorus, leading to bone and skull malformations. The child exhibited the skeletal deformities of rickets from inadequately mineralized bones. The child was treated with vitamin D and calcium supplements.

Keutel Syndrome

Article Abstract:

Keutel syndrome is a chromosomal disorder characterized by malformed cartilage, short fingers, and heart and lung defects. Many children with the syndrome, frequently born of blood-related parents, have hearing disorders and mental retardation. The case of a 4-year-old child with distinct physical features illustrates this unusual birth defect.
