Survey of Medicaid child dental services in Washington State: preparation for a marketing program

Article Abstract:

A survey of dentists in Washington State reveals that a marketing program needs to be developed to ensure that more children covered by Medicaid receive dental care. The survey of 336 dentists found that 62% saw 25 or fewer Medicaid children in 1996. Pediatric dentists saw many more Medicaid children. Many dentists were concerned about low reimbursement rates and half said they had problems getting their billing questions answered. Forty-five percent did not consider the care of children to be a priority.

How can dentists and parents communicate effectively about children's dental health needs?

Article Abstract:

Parents should be convinced that it may be worthwhile to treat a child's baby teeth, even though they will eventually fall out. If the tooth is extracted prematurely, the surrounding teeth will shift to fill the space, which could cause future problems.
