TAK1 is activated in the myocardium after pressure overload and is sufficient to provoke heart failure in transgenic mice

Article Abstract:

The transforming-growth-factor-beta-activated kinase TAK1 is induced in heart muscle by mechanical stress, according to a study in mice. An activating mutation of TAK1 in heart muscle caused symptoms of heart failure, including hypertrophy, myocardial dysfunction, and death.

In stroke, complement will get you nowhere

Article Abstract:

Complement may be involved in brain damage caused by stroke and a drug that blocks complement activation may limit such damage. The drug is sCR1sLex, an inhibitor of complement activation bound to a chemical that blocks selectin-mediated cell adhesion.

Aquaporin-4 deletion in mice reduces brain edema after acute water intoxication and ischemic stroke

Article Abstract:

Drugs that inhibit the glial membrane water channel aquaporin-4 may reduce brain edema. Mice that were deficient in aquaporin-4 had 35% less cerebral edema following a stroke and better outcomes than mice with intact aquaporin-4.
