Tackling strokes: The government's green paper sets specific targets for a reduction in the incidence of stroke

Article Abstract:

One-third of patients who have a stroke will survive the acute event, but will be left with disabilities. The green paper Our Healthier Nation, aims to reduce the incidence of death from heart disease and stroke in people under 65. Measures include healthier diets, increased exercise and a reduction in smoking, which should ultimately have an impact on stroke prevalence in the over 65s. There is a lack of definition of the role of the nurse in stroke rehabilitation, and educational provision is also lacking.

Galloping consumption: Tuberculosis is a global emergency

Article Abstract:

The are currently more cases of tuberculosis globally than ever before, despite an effective cure. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation an emergency in 1993, but the disease has continued to increase. Just 5% of cases occur in developed nations, but this is expected to rise, with multi-drug resistant TB a problem in New York, Russia and Estonia. The main reason for the failure of TB control in developing countries is not completing the prescribed course of treatment.

Tuberculosis: the history of incidence and treatment

Article Abstract:

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest known diseases afflicting humans. It was treated in many ways in the past, but there was a dramatic decline in the incidence of and mortality from TB when chemotherapy was developed and screening and vaccination programmes brought into operation. However, the number of TB cases has risen significantly in the late twentieth century, possibly as a result of poverty, HIV infections and growing numbers of refugees.
