Shigekazu Nagata

Article Abstract:

Shigekazu Nagata, one of Japan's leading biomedical scientists, is attempting to connect his earlier work with granulocyte colony stimulating factor to cell death. Nagata has noted that a macrophage near a dying cell will fragment the nuclei, and feels this must be related to enucleation during differentiation.

Japan's laws on recombinant DNA tie researcher's hands

Article Abstract:

Violation of government rules for using recombinant DNA technology could land Japanese scientists in jail for an year with 1 million Yen as fine. There is a divided opinion about the new law, which according to some researchers is burdensome, while others are of the opinion that it has made things easier.

Tainted transfusion leaves Japan scrambling for safer blood tests

Japan was in for a major scare, when health officials announced that a patient had become infected with HIV after receiving a blood transfusion. Japan is now anxious to find a comprehensive solution to the problem, as it is the only developed nation with a rising HIV infection rate.
