Article Abstract:

Dentists need to create an information storage and retrieval system consisting of clinical trials of various dental treatments. This will allow them to use treatments that have been scientifically proven to be effective. In medicine, this is called evidence-based medicine. Such a system could be developed by the American Dental Association, particularly, the association's library. Dentists could have a computer in their office that could access this system.

Dentists can make a financial contribution to the Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry, which received a high rating from the Baltimore Sun in August, 1998. Opened in 1996 at the University of Maryland, the museum is seeking federal designation as a national museum.

Dentists should challenge any state or federal law that allows non-licensed dental auxiliary personnel to diagnose or treat oral diseases. Six states allow dental hygienists to work unsupervised by a dentist and to identify pathological states in the mouth.
