Taking control

Article Abstract:

The Challenge of Change stress management program offered by the Work Skills Centre, University of York, UK, is designed to help people to accept events as they are as quickly as possible, and not to dwell on memories and anticipations. The program aims to help people acknowledge their emotions while not allowing themselves to be governed by them. Program participants are given training in both rapid and deep relaxation techniques as well as being taught how to communicate more effectively.

A threat to health

Article Abstract:

The level of stress experienced by a person is determined by the way in which that person responds to a particular event. If the event is seen in the person's mind as stressful, then physical manifestations of stress start to emerge. These include a considerable increase in adrenal horomones and catecholamines such as cortisol and adrenaline. The best way to combat stress is to train people to view events differently, changing the key personality characteristics involved in stress.
