Tales of travail

Article Abstract:

A Government Green Paper threatening the provision of gypsy sites may affect gypsies' health care. A Caravan Site Act, 1968 revision aims to withdraw local authorities' obligation to provide sites and proposes to end government financial support. Fewer sites will worsen an existing problem of limited access to primary health care. However, the Safe Childbirth for Travellers Campaign aims to improve the service to pregnant women.

Lost leaders

Article Abstract:

Some midwifery managers may be obstructing innovative practice. Since National Health Service management reorganisation in the 1980s many managers have been appointed without appropriate clinical experience. Their emphasis on commercialisation may be reducing service quality. The development of a cliet-orientated midwifery service depends on the support of managers. However, many are failing to provide it.

The right of refusal?

Article Abstract:

A high court decision allowing a caesarian section to be performed against a woman's wishes has raised ethical questions. The decision suggests that an unborn baby's rights should override a woman's rights over her own body. The Association of Radical Midwives endorses a woman's right to accept or refuse treatment. However, some have suggested the intervention was intended to save the woman's life.
