Telephone advice: new solutions for old problems

Article Abstract:

As telephone calls by people seeking medical advice increase, primary care practitioners must plan for such calls, allowing for time and personnel to take calls, developing protocols, training staff and documenting patient problems and advice given. An initial assessment of the number and type of calls received will help the practitioner plan and implement an effective telephone-advice program. Franchised telephone health advisory services are available for practitioners unable or unwilling to conduct telephone triage themselves.

Second licensure for advanced practice: current status

Article Abstract:

Decisions by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing regarding an additional layer of licensing for advanced practice nurses could have significant impacts on practicing nurses. Arguments for and against the proposal, a history of its development, and implications of its implementation have been presented. A second license for advanced practice nurses would more clearly define their role and hold them accountable to a state regulating board.
