Texas moves on private psychiatric, rehab hospital abuse

Article Abstract:

The Texas Legislature is investigating financial and patient abuse at private psychiatric hospitals and rehabilitation centers where head injuries are treated. Complaints include low quality care, unethical marketing tactics and expensive treatments. National Medical Enterprises Inc is a primary target of the investigation because of complaints against several of its psychiatric facilities. The legislature is proposing criminal and civil penalties against abusive hospitals.

Wyo. limited licensure law declared unconsitutional

Article Abstract:

The Wyoming Supreme Court rejected a part of the Mental Health Professions Practice Act as amended in 1993, that required 3,000 hours of clinical experience in nonprofit or government settings. Three individuals who sought the same experience in for-profit facilities, plus a private professional corporation, charged discrimination. The Court rejected claims by the state Mental Health Professions Licensing Board that quality control justified the discrimination.
